Frase vs Surfer SEO vs Semrush: Which AI SEO Tool Is Best for Ecommerce?

Frase, Surfer SEO, Semrush, Hike SEO, and SEOWriting.ai tested on a live ecommerce blog -- which content editor earns its price and which is only worth it if you need the full SEO toolkit.

MD
Mark Dunne

Most ecommerce sellers who blog treat SEO as an afterthought. Write the post, publish it, check traffic after six months, see zero impressions, then start looking for tools. That was me in January -- 47 articles on a supplements blog, 11 indexed, 3 getting any traffic worth measuring.

I spent four weeks in February and March 2026 testing Frase, Surfer SEO, Semrush, Hike SEO, and SEOWriting.ai across the same set of target articles. These are my honest notes, including the tool I actually kept paying for after testing ended.

TL;DR verdict

Frase ($49/mo) wins on value for content research and brief building. Surfer SEO ($119/mo) has the best content editor and the integrations that match. Semrush ($140/mo) is only worth it if you need the full keyword and backlink toolkit -- the content module alone is not worth the price. For volume on a budget, SEOWriting.ai at $19/mo is the only option that makes sense. See how we test for full methodology.

How did we evaluate these AI SEO tools for ecommerce?

Testing ran across a live ecommerce blog with 47 published articles. I used the same five target keywords for each tool and measured content editor usability, SERP research depth, AI writing quality, integration options, and ranking movement over 30 days.

Tools I excluded: Ahrefs (no traditional content editor -- better for link building), Jasper (a marketing copy tool, not an SEO optimiser -- see Jasper vs Writesonic for that comparison). Hike SEO and SEOWriting.ai are included because they solve specific ecommerce problems the top three do not address.

One note on pricing: all five tools are priced for businesses running real content operations, not for someone publishing once a month. I will flag where the maths works and where it does not.

How does Frase work for ecommerce blog content?

Frase builds content briefs by pulling the top 20 SERP results for your keyword and extracting their structure, headings, statistics, and topic clusters. You get a score out of 100 based on how well your draft covers the expected topics. Simple premise, well executed.

At $49/month for the Starter plan (10 articles), it is the most accessible entry point in this group. The AI agent can generate full section drafts, but the real value is in the research layer. I briefed three product comparison articles in 47 minutes total using Frase -- the same work done manually took just over two hours.

Frase

Content research, AI writing, and SERP analysis in one editor

from $49/mo

Best for: Ecommerce blogs publishing 4-10 articles per month, particularly comparison and guide content

The SERP analysis pulls 20 results within 60 seconds: a breakdown of headings, word counts, readability scores, and People Also Ask questions across competing articles. I found two topic gaps in my ketogenic supplement comparison articles that I had missed entirely on manual review. The tool flags them as a percentage coverage gap, so you know exactly what to add.

The AI visibility tracking feature -- which monitors how your content appears in ChatGPT and Perplexity -- is available on Professional plans ($129/month). Useful if you are actively trying to get picked up in AI answer results. For a broader strategy on this, see how to get your products cited by ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews.

Frase holds a 4.8 out of 5 rating on G2 across 300+ reviews, with users consistently citing SERP research depth as the standout feature.

What works

  • SERP research pulls 20 results in under 60 seconds with full heading breakdowns
  • Content score highlights missing topics clearly -- caught gaps on 8 of 12 articles tested
  • AI generates section drafts from the brief with one click; useful starting point
  • Chrome extension integrates with WordPress and Google Docs
  • $49/month Starter plan covers 10 articles -- sensible for weekly publishers
  • Free trial available before committing to a paid plan

What does not

  • Content editor feels less polished than Surfer -- the NLP term list is shorter and less precise
  • Topic cluster planning is basic; no automated internal linking suggestions
  • AI writing output is serviceable but needs heavier editing than Surfer's
  • Starter plan limits you to 10 documents per month -- hit that quickly if you write comparison content

How does Surfer SEO perform on content quality?

Surfer is built for one thing: making sure your article is more thoroughly optimised than whatever currently ranks above you. The Content Editor assigns a score from 0-100 based on NLP term density, word count, heading structure, and keyword usage. According to Surfer's published data, articles optimised to a score above 76 see an average 17% ranking improvement within 90 days.

The tool costs $119/month for the Essential plan and offers no free trial. That is the main barrier. But if organic blog content generates at least 15-20% of your store's revenue, the spend is defensible once you do the maths.

Surfer SEO

Content optimisation with NLP scoring, topic clusters, and AI writing

from $119/mo

Best for: Established ecommerce blogs with a consistent publishing schedule and real organic traffic goals

The Google Docs integration is the feature most users underestimate. It adds a live Surfer panel inside your document, so the score updates as you write. I tested this on a 2,800-word supplement guide and hit a score of 78 in a single writing session without switching tabs. That kind of live feedback loop is something Frase's workflow cannot match.

The Scale plan ($219/month) adds white labelling and multi-user access -- relevant if you have a content team or use a writing agency. At that price point it competes with Semrush for budget allocation, and you need to decide which toolkit matters more.

Our existing Surfer SEO vs Frase comparison covers the two-tool head-to-head in more detail if that is the decision you are working through.

What works

  • Best content editor in this group -- NLP terms, score, and topic suggestions all visible simultaneously
  • Google Docs native integration is genuinely useful for writers who draft there
  • AI Humanizer reduces AI detection scores -- a generated draft tested at 4.2% AI probability after running it
  • Topic cluster builder identifies supporting article opportunities automatically
  • AI visibility monitoring across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI, and Gemini -- included on all plans, not just premium tiers

What does not

  • No free trial -- you pay $119/month before knowing if the workflow suits you
  • Expensive for solo sellers publishing fewer than 4 posts per month; cost per article does not work
  • No meaningful Amazon or Etsy keyword database -- this is a Google-only SEO tool
  • Topical authority audits can produce recommendations broad enough to feel generic rather than actionable

Is Semrush worth the cost for ecommerce content teams?

Semrush is a different product category entirely. At $140/month for the Pro plan, you get keyword research, backlink analysis, site audits, rank tracking, and competitor intelligence. The content optimisation module (SEO Writing Assistant) is only available on the Guru plan at $250/month.

That pricing structure changes the decision. You are not buying Semrush for content optimisation -- you are buying the full SEO intelligence suite and using the writing tools as a bonus. If you already use Semrush for keyword research and competitor tracking, the Guru-plan writing assistant is a useful addition. If you only want a content editor, Frase at $49/month is the more rational choice.

Semrush

Full-suite SEO platform with keyword research, backlinks, site audits, and content tools

from $140/mo

Best for: Ecommerce stores running paid and organic campaigns simultaneously, needing one tool for both

I ran a site audit on a 200-page Shopify store using Semrush in 8 minutes. The same audit done manually would take two working days. The backlink database indexes 43 billion URLs -- the most comprehensive of any tool in this group by a considerable margin. For sellers doing Google Shopping and outreach link building at the same time, Semrush earns its price at the platform level, not just the blog level.

Where it falls short is content editing. The SEO Writing Assistant (Guru plan only) produces content scores, but the NLP analysis is less granular than Surfer or Frase. I scored the same article 71 on Surfer, 68 on Frase, and 74 on Semrush -- but Semrush flagged fewer specific improvements, making edits harder to prioritise. Semrush holds a 4.5 rating on G2 with users praising the research suite but repeatedly noting the content tools are secondary to the research toolkit.

For context on how tools like Semrush fit into broader AI search visibility, see how AI shopping agents are reshaping ecommerce discovery.

What works

  • Most comprehensive keyword database of any tool here -- covers product page and category keyword research well
  • Backlink analysis and competitor research are genuinely best-in-class
  • Rank tracking and position history for any domain or competitor
  • Site audit catches technical issues fast -- crawls 500 pages in under 10 minutes
  • 14-day free trial on the Pro plan is generous and worth using before committing

What does not

  • Content optimisation requires the $250/month Guru plan -- expensive entry point if writing tools are the priority
  • SEO Writing Assistant is less specific than Surfer or Frase for editing guidance
  • No AI content generation to speak of -- research and analytics, not a writing tool
  • Feature overload for sellers who only want to optimise blog posts; most of the dashboard is irrelevant

How does Hike SEO differ from the others?

Hike SEO is a guided SEO platform that generates a weekly action plan based on your store and target keywords. At $149/month, it costs more than Semrush's entry plan but is specifically built for ecommerce store owners without an SEO background.

The interface prioritises tasks over data. Rather than presenting a metrics dashboard, Hike gives you a to-do list: update this title tag, add internal links from this article to this page, fix missing alt text on these images. I completed a full Hike audit and first-week action plan for a 60-product Shopify store in one afternoon.

Hike SEO

Guided ecommerce SEO with weekly action plans and step-by-step recommendations

from $149/mo

Best for: Ecommerce owners who find standard SEO tools overwhelming and want a structured, guided workflow rather than a data dashboard

Where Hike falls short is content editing. There is no content scorer, no NLP term analysis, and no AI writing. It is an SEO strategy and task management platform, not a content optimisation tool. If your goal is improving article rankings or writing better-scoring content, Hike does not help with that directly.

The affiliate link for Hike includes a 50% discount for new customers -- use the link in the Hike SEO review to claim it.

What works

  • Guided approach removes guesswork -- weekly priorities are clear and actionable for non-experts
  • Ecommerce-specific recommendations for product pages, category pages, and blog posts
  • On-page technical audits are practical and easy to follow
  • Connects to Google Search Console, which works for Shopify, WooCommerce, and any CMS

What does not

  • No content editor or NLP scoring -- this is a strategy tool, not a writing tool
  • $149/month is expensive for what is, in practice, a guided task list
  • No AI writing or content generation features
  • Keyword research is basic compared to Semrush and outpaced by Frase's SERP depth

How does SEOWriting.ai compare on cost per article?

SEOWriting.ai is the outlier. At $19/month, it generates full articles, product roundups, and how-to guides in one click using real-time Google data. You pick a keyword, set the format, and within 90 seconds you have a 1,500-2,500 word draft with internal heading structure, keyword density suggestions, and linked image placeholders.

I tested it across 12 articles over two weeks. The output is 70-80% of the way to publishable -- typically 20-30 minutes of editing per article to add first-person detail, restructure any generic headings, and inject real numbers. On the Starter plan at $19/month, the per-article cost is lower than any other tool here.

SEOWriting.ai

AI article generation with 1-click publishing and real-time SEO data integration

from $19/mo

Best for: Sellers needing 10+ articles per month who cannot justify $119-250/month on a content editor

The free plan lets you test on 3 articles before paying anything. The WordPress integration publishes directly with scheduled dates. For a seller maintaining three posts per week, this cuts content production cost by roughly 70% compared to freelance writing at typical UK rates.

The ceiling is real though. For authoritative comparison guides targeting featured snippets or AI citation, SEOWriting.ai output is too generic to compete against properly optimised human-edited content. The structure it generates is fine. The voice and original data are not there. See best AI SEO tools for ecommerce for a broader view of where tools like this sit in a content stack.

What works

  • $19/month is by far the cheapest cost-per-article in this group
  • 1-click generation with real-time Google data included -- output is keyword-relevant, not hallucinated
  • WordPress and Shopify blog integration for direct publishing
  • 48 language support -- useful for sellers with multilingual product catalogues
  • Free tier available before any payment commitment

What does not

  • Output needs editing before publishing -- not usable as generated for competitive keywords
  • No real-time content scoring or NLP suggestions during editing -- you generate and then edit elsewhere
  • Generic structure on comparison content; struggles where original research is expected
  • No site audit, keyword research, or backlink tools -- purely an article output tool
