Nobody gets only 5-star reviews. 4.8 means roughly eight 5-stars for every 4-star, with the odd 1-star. Lower it if your returns are high.
Why the expected mix matters
The gap between your expected mix and your target is the whole engine of this sum. Reviews averaging 4.8 pull a listing towards 4.8 and no further, so a 4.8 target is unreachable at a 4.8 mix no matter how many reviews arrive.

How the numbers are calculated
A star rating is a plain arithmetic mean of every rating on the listing. Adding k new ratings at an average of a to n existing ratings at an average of r gives a new average of:
- new average = (n x r + k x a) / (n + k)
- rearranged for the target t: k = n x (t - r) / (a - t)
- valid only when a > t
That last line is the constraint sellers miss. If the reviews you expect average at or below your target, the average is being pulled towards a, not towards t, so no quantity of them gets you there. Reviews averaging 4.5 will never lift a listing to 4.5.
The answer is rounded up to a whole review, because you cannot collect four fifths of one. The monthly pace figures divide that rounded total across 3, 6 and 12 months and round up again.
Caveats worth reading
- Amazon’s displayed rating is not a plain mean. It runs a weighted model that leans on how recent a review is and whether the purchase was verified, among other signals it does not publish. Treat every figure here as a floor estimate: the direction is right, the exact count is not gospel.
- Amazon shows one decimal place and rounds the star graphic to the nearest half star. A move from 4.24 to 4.26 changes nothing a shopper can see. A move from 4.24 to 4.25 changes the graphic.
- Ratings without written reviews count towards the average. The count beside the stars is usually much higher than the number of written reviews, so use the ratings count here.
- Removed reviews, policy takedowns and returns all shift the number in ways no calculator can predict.
- This is a single-ASIN calculation. If your ratings are shared across a parent listing with variations, the pool is bigger than one child ASIN and the maths still holds on the pooled count.

Why does 4.3 feel so much harder than it looks?
Because the denominator only ever grows. At 40 ratings a single 5-star review moves the average by about two hundredths. At 400 it moves it by two thousandths. The listing that most needs the lift is usually the one with enough history to resist it.
Which is why the useful lever is rarely volume. Fix the reason for the 1-star and 2-star reviews first, then the mix improves and the required volume falls. Read the negative reviews before you buy a tool to chase more of them.
How do you work out how many reviews you need?
Take your existing ratings as one lump and the new ones as another, then find the point where the combined mean hits your target. In formula terms, k = n x (t - r) / (a - t), where n is your rating count, r your current average, t your target and a the average of the reviews you expect. The calculator above shows that working.
The number that surprises people is a. Sellers assume new reviews arrive at 5.0 and plan against 83 reviews when the realistic figure at a 4.8 mix is 137. Same listing, same target, nearly double the work. Set a honestly and the plan survives contact with reality.
How do you get more reviews without breaking Amazon’s rules?
Use the routes Amazon provides and nothing else. There are four worth knowing, and the boundary between them and a suspension is narrower than most sellers think.
- Request a Review.The button in Seller Central sends Amazon’s own templated request for a product review and seller feedback, available between 5 and 30 days after delivery. It is one click per order, you cannot edit the wording, and that is exactly why it is safe. Tools can trigger it through the API on your behalf.
- Vine, for new ASINs. Enrol a product with fewer than 30 reviews and Vine Voices receive free units in exchange for honest reviews. You pay an enrolment fee per parent ASIN and you have no say in what they write. Some Vine reviews are brutal. That is the deal.
- Inserts must not ask for positive reviews. A card in the box can point to your warranty, your support address or a neutral request to review the product. It cannot ask for a 5-star review, cannot offer anything in exchange, and cannot try to divert unhappy buyers away from leaving a review. That last one is the most commonly missed rule.
- No incentives, full stop. No refunds, gift cards, discounts, free products, prize draws or loyalty points in exchange for a review. No review groups, no friends and family, no purchasing reviews. Amazon detects these through purchase and account patterns rather than the wording, and the penalty runs to listing suppression or account closure.
One more thing worth saying plainly. If your rating is at 3.8, the problem is usually the product, the packaging or the listing promising something the item does not do. Read the one-star and two-star reviews, fix the cause, and the mix improves on its own, which drops the review count you need in the calculator above.
Which rating targets are actually worth chasing?
The 4.5 line is the one most sellers aim for, because the text and the star graphic agree at that point and it clears the mental filter shoppers apply when comparing three listings. Below 4.0 the drop-off is steep. Between 4.0 and 4.5 the gains are real but gradual.
Above 4.7 the arithmetic turns against you fast. Going from 4.2 to 4.7 on 137 ratings takes 685 new ratings at a 4.8 mix, against 137 for the 4.5 target. Five times the work for two tenths of a star. In most categories that budget does better spent on advertising efficiency or on the listing itself.

Going from 4.2 on 137 ratings to 4.5 needs 137 new ratings averaging 4.8, or 83 if every single one is 5 stars. The same jump from 4.2 on 500 ratings needs 500 new ratings at 4.8, because the denominator is what makes it hard.

- How much does one 1-star review damage my rating?
- Far more than one 5-star review helps, and the effect shrinks with volume. On 137 ratings at 4.2, one 1-star review drops you to 4.18, which takes about five 5-star reviews to undo. On 1,000 ratings the same 1-star review moves the average by three thousandths and nobody notices. Early ratings are where the damage lands.
- Does Amazon use a plain average for the displayed rating?
- No. Amazon has used a weighted model since 2015 that leans on how recent a review is and whether the purchase was verified, along with other signals it does not publish. That is why a listing sometimes shows a rating that does not match the arithmetic mean of its star breakdown. A plain mean gives you a floor estimate: the direction and rough scale are right, the exact review count is not a promise.
- Why does Amazon show 4.2 when my average is 4.24?
- Amazon prints the rating to one decimal place and rounds the star graphic to the nearest half star. So 4.24 shows as 4.2 with a four-and-a-half star graphic, and 4.26 shows as 4.3 with the same graphic. We show two decimals so you can watch progress the listing has not caught up with yet, because those hundredths are what eventually flip the visible number.
- How long does it take to fix a bad Amazon rating?
- Divide the reviews you need by your monthly rating rate. Most listings convert somewhere between 1% and 3% of orders into ratings, so 137 needed ratings at 2% means about 6,850 orders. If you sell 500 units a month that is roughly fourteen months. The faster route is almost always fixing whatever causes the 1-star reviews, because a better mix cuts the volume required.
