Hotjar AI Review 2026: Do the AI Features Help Ecommerce Sellers?

Hotjar merged into Contentsquare in July 2025, splitting one bundled plan into three billing lines. Here is what the AI features actually do and whether the new pricing is worth it for Shopify sellers.

Hotjar was acquired by Contentsquare and formally merged on 1 July 2025. If you have not checked your Hotjar subscription recently, what you are paying for -- and what you are now getting -- may have changed significantly.

TL;DR verdict

Hotjar's heatmaps and session recordings remain the best tool for understanding why Shopify visitors do not convert. The AI features (Sense Chat, Sense Analyst) are useful assistants, not autonomous analysts. The Contentsquare merger has split what was one bundled plan into up to three separate billing lines -- verify you are not paying double before renewing. Full methodology at /how-we-test.

How did we evaluate Hotjar for ecommerce sellers?

We ran Contentsquare (Hotjar) across two Shopify stores over six weeks: a supplements brand with roughly 4,000 monthly sessions and a home goods store at around 22,000 sessions. The supplements store used the Growth plan; the home goods store was on a legacy Hotjar Plus plan mid-migration. We tested every AI feature available on the Growth tier in August 2026.

Amazon FBA use cases are excluded entirely. Hotjar installs on websites you control. Amazon sellers need separate tools -- see our best AI tools for Amazon FBA guide for what actually works there.

Is Hotjar still a separate product in 2026?

Hotjar.com still exists and the brand name remains in use, but Hotjar Ltd. formally merged into the Contentsquare Group on 1 July 2025. For new signups, you are buying Contentsquare products. The Hotjar pricing page now redirects to Contentsquare. Existing customers are being migrated through 2026.

The old Hotjar bundled heatmaps, session recordings, and surveys into one plan. Contentsquare has split this into three separate billing lines. If you want the same functionality as Hotjar Plus, you now need Experience Analytics AND Voice of Customer -- at $49 plus $99 per month minimum, compared to the old $32/month Plus plan.

That is not necessarily bad. The individual products are more capable than their predecessors. But the total bill is higher, and the migration documentation is confusing enough that I spent 40 minutes in the Contentsquare help centre before I understood my own billing status.

How do the Contentsquare plans compare for ecommerce?

Voice of Customer$99/mo (annual)N/AAI survey generator500 responses/month

The free tier is genuinely generous for smaller stores. A Shopify store doing under 50,000 monthly visitors can use heatmaps, session replays, and funnels without paying anything. The AI features start at the Growth plan.

What is Sense Chat and does it actually help?

Sense Chat is Contentsquare's AI chat interface for your own analytics data. You type a question -- "why are visitors dropping off the product page?" or "what do users do after viewing the size guide?" -- and it surfaces patterns from your session recordings and heatmaps.

I tested it across the home goods store over two weeks. I asked it 14 distinct questions about conversion behaviour on the main product page. It answered 11 of them usefully. The other three returned generic patterns where the session sample was too thin -- mainly questions about specific device types with under 200 recordings in the window.

The standout result: I asked why 67% of visitors were clicking the secondary product image before the add-to-cart button. Sense Chat identified that the primary image showed the product closed; most people were checking the open version before committing. That insight led to a product image reorder that shifted add-to-cart rate from 4.1% to 5.8% in three weeks.

The limit: Sense Chat is reactive. It answers what you ask. It does not proactively surface the biggest problem in your funnel. You still need to know which questions matter.

What does Sense Analyst offer that Sense Chat does not?

Sense Analyst is scheduled insight generation -- it runs analyses automatically and surfaces findings in a weekly digest without you asking. It is in beta on Pro and Enterprise plans only.

We did not test Sense Analyst directly. Based on Contentsquare's documentation, it runs scheduled heatmap and journey analysis, summarises anomalies, and flags conversion drop-off patterns automatically. Useful for teams with multiple stores or dedicated CRO staff. Overkill for a solo operator on $5k/month Shopify revenue.

Hotjar (Contentsquare)

Heatmaps, session recordings, and AI-assisted CRO for Shopify

from Free - $49/mo

Best for: Shopify sellers who want to understand why visitors are not converting -- visual friction identification rather than revenue attribution.

I set up Contentsquare on the supplements store in 23 minutes. The Shopify integration is a one-click pixel install. Checkout tracking is the tricky part -- Shopify's checkout extensibility requires adding Contentsquare as a Customer Events app separately in your Shopify admin. Without that step, you miss the most valuable part of the funnel entirely.

What works

  • Heatmap accuracy. Click maps, scroll maps, and move maps load within 24 hours of install. Zone-based heatmaps on the Growth plan let you click any element and see exact interaction counts.
  • Session recordings for CRO. Watching 40 minutes of recordings per day on the supplements store identified three friction points in the first week that no analytics dashboard would have caught: a misleading "Add to Bundle" button, a subscription modal appearing too early, and product description text that was unreadable at tablet size.
  • Sense Chat for direct questions. The 11/14 useful answer rate was consistent. For diagnosing specific friction points, it is faster than manually reviewing recordings.
  • The free tier is useful. 200k sessions and 100 surveys per month covers most small Shopify stores completely.
  • MCP integration. You can query Contentsquare data from Claude or ChatGPT via a connected MCP server. Niche, but powerful for technical teams doing natural language analysis on their own data.

What does not

  • The pricing migration is confusing. Existing Hotjar customers need to actively verify what they are now paying for and whether their old features are still included at the same price. Do not assume.
  • Surveys are now a separate product. If you used Hotjar surveys for exit intent feedback, that is now Voice of Customer at $99/month extra. A meaningful increase for sellers who relied on survey data.
  • Sense Chat struggles with thin data. Segments with under 200 sessions return unreliable answers. Works well for high-traffic pages; less useful for product-level analysis on a sparse catalogue.
  • No revenue attribution. Contentsquare tells you what visitors do. It does not tell you which traffic source drove the most revenue. For that you need a dedicated analytics tool -- see best AI ecommerce analytics tools.

Polar Analytics

AI attribution and unified analytics for high-GMV Shopify brands

from From $470/mo

Best for: Shopify DTC brands at $1M+ annual GMV running paid social and wanting revenue attribution across multiple channels without a BI tool.

Polar Analytics and Hotjar solve different problems. Hotjar shows you why visitors do not convert. Polar shows you which channel drove the revenue. They are complementary, not competing -- but I have included both here because it is the most common pairing question we receive from Shopify sellers deciding where to invest in analytics.

What works

  • Multi-channel attribution in one dashboard. Shopify, Meta, Google, TikTok, and Klaviyo data unified automatically. I was alerted to a 23% ROAS drop on Meta within 4 hours of it starting on the home goods store -- the anomaly detection caught it before our daily morning review.
  • Blended metrics calculated automatically. nCAC, LTV by cohort, and contribution margin by SKU without needing a data warehouse or BI tool.
  • Built for Shopify DTC. The native Shopify integration is as close to plug-and-play as you get at this level of analytics depth.

What does not

  • $470/month entry price. The unit economics only justify this at $50k+ monthly revenue running meaningful paid social spend. It is not a tool for early-stage stores.
  • Amazon attribution is limited. If you run a hybrid FBA and DTC business, Polar covers the Shopify side well and the Amazon side poorly. Use separate tools for FBA analytics.
  • Setup time. We spent 3 hours connecting all ad accounts and verifying UTM consistency before the dashboard data was trustworthy.
