I have run more than 40 hours of product demos, tutorials, and unboxing videos through OpusClip over the past three months. The results split almost exactly by content type: for talking-head and interview footage it consistently finds clips worth posting, for product-in-use footage it picks the wrong moments about half the time.
That split tells you most of what you need to know before reading further.
TL;DR verdict
OpusClip is the right tool if you already produce long-form video and want an AI to do the clipping and captioning work for you. At $15/month (Starter) it is good value for podcasters, course creators, and sellers with a consistent long-form output. If you do not produce long-form video, or your upload volume is variable month to month, the credit expiry system will frustrate you. See /how-we-test for full methodology.
How did we evaluate OpusClip?
Testing ran over 12 weeks across three content types: product demo videos (3-15 minutes), tutorial and how-to content (15-45 minutes), and interview and podcast content (30-60 minutes). I uploaded 41 videos totalling approximately 23 hours of footage on the Pro plan and assessed each generated clip set on virality score accuracy, caption quality, product fidelity, and how often the AI selected a clip I would actually post.
For benchmarking I ran the same source videos through Klap and InVideo AI to establish relative performance. I excluded clips I manually selected myself -- the whole point of OpusClip is that the AI does the selecting. All pricing is current as of July 2026.

What does OpusClip actually do?
OpusClip takes a long video -- a YouTube URL or a direct upload -- and automatically identifies the most engaging 30-90 second segments, reformats them to 9:16 vertical, adds animated captions, and scores each clip for predicted virality. The whole process takes 5-15 minutes depending on source video length.
That is the complete product. Everything else in the platform -- the editor, the scheduler, the brand kit -- is built around that core clip-extraction workflow. If you do not have long-form video to extract from, OpusClip has no starting point. It cannot generate content from a script or a product brief. That is an important limitation for ecommerce sellers who film occasional short videos rather than maintaining a long-form publishing cadence.
How does the credit system work?
One credit equals one minute of uploaded video. Upload a 20-minute product review and you spend 20 credits regardless of how many clips you generate or keep from it. Credits expire after 60 days on monthly plans and 12 months on annual plans.
This is the most misunderstood aspect of OpusClip's pricing. Many sellers buy a monthly plan, use it heavily in week one, then travel for a trade show or get busy with a product launch and come back to find half their credits have expired. OpusClip's pricing page on G2 documents the credit allotments clearly, but the expiry window is easy to miss until it affects you.
The numbers per plan:
- Free: 60 credits/month (60 minutes of footage)
- Starter ($15/mo): 150 credits/month
- Pro ($29/mo): 300 credits/month, team seats, all aspect ratios, scheduler
- Pro Annual ($174/year = $14.50/mo effective): 3,600 credits granted upfront with 12-month expiry
The annual plan is significantly better value if your upload volume is consistent. The 12-month expiry window removes the monthly pressure, and the effective monthly cost drops below the Starter plan while giving twice the credits.
What does the free tier actually include?
Very little that is useful for professional content. The free tier gives 60 processing minutes per month with watermarked exports, clips deleted from storage after three days, and no access to the editor, virality score, social media scheduler, or AI B-roll. You can see whether the clip selection quality suits your footage -- that is the legitimate use of the free tier.
The free tier is a permanent plan (no credit card required), not a time-limited trial. For a proper assessment of whether OpusClip works for your content, you need at least the Starter plan for one month. The virality score and editor access are what distinguish OpusClip from free alternatives, and neither is available until you pay. G2 reviews for OpusClip reflect this -- free tier users consistently rate it lower than paid users for the same underlying feature set.
How accurate is the virality score?
Useful directionally, not reliable as an absolute number. OpusClip scores each generated clip 0-100 for predicted viral potential based on factors including pacing, speaker energy, topic keywords, and viewer retention patterns. In my testing, the highest-scoring clips were usually genuinely strong -- good energy, clear hook, natural end point. The lowest-scoring clips were usually poor. The middle range (40-70) was where judgement still mattered.
For ecommerce content specifically, the score has a systematic bias: it rewards talking-head energy and quotable moments over product demonstrations. In one test batch from a 25-minute supplement review, the top-scored clip was a 52-second segment where I explained the problem the product solves -- no product visible. The clip showing the product texture, consistency, and before/after scored 38. The talking-head clip has more raw virality potential on TikTok; the product clip has more purchase intent. OpusClip is optimising for the former.
That is not a flaw -- it is a design choice. Creators building audiences benefit from it. Sellers driving purchase decisions need to apply their own filter on top of the AI's selection.
What works
- Clip extraction from interview and podcast content is genuinely strong -- multi-speaker reformatting handles both faces on screen better than most competitors
- Processing speed is fast: a 45-minute video typically returns 12-15 clips in under 10 minutes
- Auto-captions are accurate and the animated style options are clean, if not as varied as Submagic's
- Pro annual plan at $14.50/mo effective is good value for consistent long-form publishers
- Social scheduler on Pro means clip-to-posted workflow stays inside one platform
- Brand kit saves caption styles, colours, and logo placement across all clips without reconfiguring per video
What does not
- Credit expiry (60 days on monthly) punishes variable-volume users -- sellers who publish in bursts will forfeit unused credits regularly
- Virality score deprioritises product-in-use footage in favour of high-energy talking-head moments
- Free tier is too restricted for meaningful pre-purchase testing (no virality score, no editor, 3-day clip expiry)
- No content generation -- sellers without long-form footage have no entry point
- AI B-roll selection is inconsistent: relevant clips appear alongside obviously irrelevant stock footage in the same batch
- Clip selection for instructional product content (how-to, assembly, comparison) misses more often than it hits
Who should use OpusClip and who should not?
The tool fits a specific workflow: you produce long-form video regularly and want an AI to handle the clip selection, formatting, and captioning so you can spend your time on the original content rather than the repurposing.
Use OpusClip if:
- You publish weekly or fortnightly long-form YouTube videos, podcasts, or webinars
- Your content is interview, commentary, or tutorial-based (these generate the best clip selections)
- You want clips posted to multiple platforms without leaving one tool
- Your upload volume is consistent enough to use monthly credits before they expire
Consider an alternative if:
- You do not produce long-form video -- see best OpusClip alternatives for tools that generate content from a brief
- Your product content is highly visual (demonstrations, comparisons, before/after) where the virality score consistently misranks what you would actually post
- Your upload volume is irregular and you will lose credits most months
- You need animated caption styles beyond what OpusClip offers (Submagic has a significantly wider range)

How does OpusClip pricing compare to alternatives?
| Tool | Entry price | Credit system? | Credits expire? | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| OpusClip Starter | $15/mo (150 min) | Yes -- per minute uploaded | 60 days (monthly) | Consistent long-form publishers |
| OpusClip Pro Annual | $14.50/mo effective | Yes -- 3,600 min/year | 12 months | High-volume publishers |
| Klap | ~$30/mo | No -- plan-based | No | Quality-first clipping |
| Submagic Pro | ~$20/mo | No -- unlimited videos | No | Caption-first workflow |
| InVideo AI | $28/mo | Partial -- AI features | No | Content creation from scratch |
| CapCut Pro | ~$10/mo | No | No | Manual editing, free option |
The annual Pro plan is the most competitive option if you are committed to the tool -- $174/year undercuts most mid-tier alternatives while giving 3,600 minutes of processing. The monthly Starter at $15 is the right test tier. Run it for two months, track how many credits you actually use, and upgrade or switch based on real usage data rather than the headline number.
