Beehiiv Review
Best for Brands that publish a real newsletter and want referral growth, sponsorship income and paid tiers without giving up 10% to Substack
Our verdict
Beehiiv is the best newsletter platform for a brand that treats content as a product, with growth and monetisation tools no e-commerce ESP matches. It is not a replacement for Klaviyo or Omnisend on abandoned-cart and order flows. Run it alongside your store ESP for the editorial list, or skip it if you do not publish.

What changed in this review
- Added the partner-link offer: 20% off the first three months of Scale or Max, applied automatically, no code.
- Initial review from vendor documentation and third-party reviews. Mark runs his own newsletter on Kit and has not used Beehiiv hands-on.
TL;DR
Beehiiv scores 7/10 for e-commerce sellers. There is a free plan to get started. Beehiiv is a newsletter platform built for growth and monetisation: free to 2,500 subscribers, then $49 a month and up on Scale. It gives publishing brands a referral programme, an ad network and 0% fees on paid subscriptions. It is not an e-commerce ESP, so keep Klaviyo or Omnisend for cart and order flows.
Best for: Brands that publish a real newsletter and want referral growth, sponsorship income and paid tiers without giving up 10% to Substack. How we test tools
What Does Beehiiv Do?
Beehiiv is a newsletter platform in the mould of Morning Brew, whose former team built it. You write in a block editor, send unlimited emails, and get a hosted website, link-in-bio page, podcast hosting and subscriber analytics thrown in. The free Launch plan covers up to 2,500 active subscribers; Scale and Max add automations, surveys, A/B testing, the ad network, paid subscriptions and digital products.
The growth tooling is the reason people pick it. A built-in referral programme rewards readers for sharing, a free recommendation network swaps subscribers with other publications, and paid recommendations (formerly Boosts) let you pay other publishers a set cost per verified subscriber, with Beehiiv taking a 20% cut of that price. On the revenue side, the ad network places sponsor slots in your issues once you pass roughly 1,000 subscribers, and paid subscriptions run through Stripe with no platform fee.
For an Amazon or Shopify brand, this is a content tool, not a commerce tool. Beehiiv does not ingest orders, does not know what a customer bought, and its only documented Shopify integration is a Make scenario that copies new customer emails across, and the vendor's own article says it needs a Shopify Plus account. That makes it a home for the editorial list, the weekly education email or the founder's letter, sitting beside Klaviyo or Omnisend, which keep the transactional and behavioural flows.

What Features Did We Test?
Newsletter editor and templates
Works wellReviewers consistently rate the block editor as quick to learn, and the July 2026 release added a visual editor. The template library is thinner than a dedicated ESP and one long-term user reports Gmail clipping on image-heavy issues.
Referral programme
Best in categoryMilestone rewards, tracking and automated reward emails are built in on every paid plan. Kit and Klaviyo need a third-party app to do the same.
Ad network and paid recommendations
Works wellThe ad network pays out once you pass about 1,000 subscribers, with a floor around $10 CPM for US audiences per third-party reports; niche B2B lists see fewer offers. Paid recommendations cost $1 to $15 per verified subscriber with a 20% fee built into the price.
Automations
AcceptableWelcome series, re-engagement and inactive-subscriber clean-up are covered on Scale. Multi-branch journeys, purchase triggers and time-zone sends are missing, and reviewers point to Kit for anything more than a straight sequence.
Shopify and e-commerce integration
Needs workThe vendor's own support article routes Shopify through a Make scenario, lists Shopify Plus as a requirement, and maps only the email field. No order data, no cart events, no product blocks.
Segmentation
AcceptableSegments by signup source, engagement, location and custom fields work, and are available even on Launch. Without purchase data there is nothing to segment on that matters to a store, and reviewers call the set-up less intuitive than competitors.
What Does Beehiiv Do Well?
Growth tooling nobody else bundles
Referral programme, free recommendation swaps and paid recommendations sit in one dashboard. A supplement brand that publishes a weekly research digest can grow that list at a known cost per subscriber rather than through cold social ads.
Zero platform fee on paid tiers
Substack keeps 10% of subscription revenue and Kit charges 3.5% plus 30 cents on commerce. Beehiiv charges nothing beyond Stripe. Third-party analysis puts the crossover at roughly $4,700 a year in paid revenue, above which Beehiiv's flat fee is cheaper.
A real free plan
2,500 subscribers with unlimited sends, a website and a custom domain costs nothing. That is enough to find out whether your customers want a newsletter before paying.
Monetisation is built in
The ad network, sponsorship storefront on Max and digital products mean a content list can carry its own cost. For a brand, that turns the newsletter from a marketing expense into a small media property.
Everything ships fast
The July 2026 summer release added Community, an AI Copilot, a visual editor and programmatic ads in one go. The trade-off, per reviewers, is that new features sometimes land before they are finished.
Where Does Beehiiv Fall Short?
It is not an e-commerce ESP
No abandoned cart, no browse abandonment, no post-purchase flow, no product feed blocks. A store that moves its whole list here loses the flows that make most of its email revenue. Klaviyo or Omnisend stay in place for that work.
The Shopify integration is a workaround
Beehiiv's support article uses Make to copy new customer emails from Shopify and lists a Shopify Plus account as a requirement. Most independent brands are on Basic or Grow, so in practice the connection is Zapier or a signup form embed.
The headline price is a small-list price
$49 applies below 1,000 subscribers. By 5,000 you are paying $89, by 10,000 $109, and by 25,000 $169 a month on Scale. Inactive subscribers count, and annual plans lock the band for 12 months even if the list shrinks.
Shallow automations
One trigger, one sequence. No conditional branches, no time-zone delivery, and click-triggered automations are held back for Max. Kit does this better for less at the same list size.
Support is asynchronous
Email tickets only, with priority support reserved for Max. Trustpilot and G2 carry a small number of reports of accounts being closed with little warning, which matters when the platform also holds your paid subscribers.

Who Should Use Beehiiv?
Brands that already publish a newsletter people forward
If you have an editorial email that readers value on its own, the referral programme, recommendations and ad network give it a growth and revenue engine that a store ESP will not.
Founders building an audience before or beside the product
The free plan, website and link-in-bio make it the cheapest way to build a list you own while the product catalogue is still small.
Supplement, fitness or hobby brands with an education angle
A weekly research digest or training email can carry sponsorship from adjacent brands, and paid tiers run with no platform fee.
Who Should Avoid Beehiiv?
Shopify stores that need cart and order flows
Beehiiv has none. Klaviyo or Omnisend recover more revenue in a month of abandoned-cart emails than a content list makes in a year for most stores.
Amazon-only sellers
Amazon does not give you buyer emails, and Beehiiv has no Amazon features at all. The only fit is an off-Amazon audience you are building deliberately.
Anyone who wants one email tool for everything
Running Beehiiv beside a store ESP means two lists, two unsubscribe states and two bills. If you will not maintain both, Klaviyo's campaign tools cover a basic newsletter adequately.
How Does Beehiiv Compare to Alternatives?

| Overall | 7/10 | 8/10 | 8/10 | 7.5/10 |
| Best for | Brands that publish a real newsletter and want referral growth, sponsorship income and paid tiers without giving up 10% to Substack | Pick Klaviyo for anything tied to the store: cart, browse and post-purchase flows, product blocks and revenue attribution. Pick Beehiiv only for a standalone editorial newsletter you want to grow through referrals and fund through sponsors. | Omnisend is the cheaper e-commerce ESP with SMS and cart recovery built in. Beehiiv wins on newsletter growth and monetisation, loses on everything that touches an order. | Postscript is SMS for Shopify, not email. The two do not compete; a brand might run Postscript for texts, Klaviyo for flows and Beehiiv for the weekly letter. |
