Klaviyo costs more. Everyone knows that. The question is whether Omnisend is good enough -- or whether you end up paying twice when you inevitably migrate.
I tested Omnisend across a Shopify supplements store with around 3,200 contacts over six weeks. The abandoned cart flow was live in 8 minutes. The AI segment builder surprised me. The deliverability numbers did not.
TL;DR verdict
Omnisend is the best-value email and SMS platform for Shopify stores under 50,000 contacts. You get 90% of what Klaviyo offers at roughly half the price, with every automation feature available on the free plan. The main drawbacks are deliverability (64-75% in independent tests) and no predictive analytics. For our full methodology, see how we test.
How did we evaluate Omnisend?
We ran Omnisend on a live Shopify store for six weeks, testing every major feature: automation workflows, the AI segment builder, SMS campaigns, deliverability via mail-tester.com, and customer support response times. We also cross-referenced G2 reviews and Capterra verified reviews to triangulate common problems. We excluded template variety from our scoring -- it matters less than deliverability and automation depth for most e-commerce sellers. We compared pricing tiers directly against Klaviyo and Postscript at the same contact sizes.

What is Omnisend and who is it for?
Omnisend is an email, SMS, and web push platform built specifically for e-commerce. It launched in 2014 and now serves over 150,000 brands, with a 4.8 rating on the Shopify App Store from over 2,700 reviews. It is not a general-purpose email tool. Every feature -- from the automation templates to the product picker -- is built around e-commerce workflows.
The core positioning is simple: everything Klaviyo does for email and SMS, at roughly half the price. Whether that holds up in practice is what the rest of this review covers.
Email, SMS, and web push for Shopify stores. Cheaper than Klaviyo, with full automation on the free plan.
from Free -- $16/mo+
Best for: Shopify sellers under 50K contacts who want email and SMS in one platform without paying Klaviyo prices.
How does Omnisend pricing compare to Klaviyo?
Omnisend is 9-43% cheaper than Klaviyo across equivalent contact tiers, with the gap widening at smaller list sizes.
At 500 contacts: Omnisend Standard is $16/month versus Klaviyo's $20/month. Not a massive difference. But as lists grow, the gap compounds. At 5,000 contacts, Omnisend charges around $81/month compared to roughly $150/month for Klaviyo. At 10,000 contacts: approximately $132 versus $240.
The free plan includes 250 contacts, 500 emails per month, 60 SMS credits, and full access to automation workflows. Most email platforms lock automations behind paid tiers. Omnisend does not.
The Pro plan at $59/month changes the SMS economics. Instead of billing SMS separately, Omnisend bundles credits equal to your monthly subscription. At $59/month, you get $59 worth of SMS credits included -- at a rate of $0.007 per message, that covers around 8,400 texts. For stores doing regular SMS campaigns, this simplifies budgeting considerably.
Annual billing reduces costs by about 17%.
What does Omnisend include at each tier?
| Plan | Monthly price | Emails/month | SMS | Key extras |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | 500 | 60 credits | All automations, AI segments, push |
| Standard | from $16 | Scales with list size | Credits subscription add-on | Remove branding, 24/7 support |
| Pro | from $59 | Unlimited | Credits included (equal to plan price) | Advanced reporting, priority support |
What works well in Omnisend?
The AI segment builder is genuinely useful
Most email platforms make you build segments by clicking through filters and dropdowns. Omnisend lets you type in plain English: "Customers who bought supplements in the last 90 days and have not opened an email in 30 days." The segment builds itself.
I used this to set up a re-engagement sequence targeting a very specific slice of my list. It took 4 minutes instead of the 20 it would have taken manually. The segment logic held up when I checked it against manual filters.
27 automation templates, live in minutes
The pre-built workflow library covers the full e-commerce lifecycle. Welcome series, abandoned cart, browse abandonment, post-purchase upsell, cross-sell, win-back. The abandoned cart flow can be active in under 10 minutes with one click. No mapping flows from scratch.
In our test, the welcome series ran a 61% open rate on the first email -- partly because the default timing is well-calibrated (send within 10 minutes of signup, follow-up at 24 hours). Most sellers improve on this, but the defaults work.
Email, SMS, and push in one unified flow
Unlike Klaviyo, which bills SMS separately and keeps it as a distinct channel, Omnisend lets you mix email, SMS, and push notifications in a single automation flow. One trigger. One customer profile. Three channels.
This matters for abandoned cart recovery. A customer who does not open the email can get an SMS an hour later, without building a separate SMS flow. The unified contact profile means you are not deduplicating across platforms.
The product picker saves real time
Drag a product block into your email, search your Shopify catalogue, click the product. Omnisend pulls the image, title, and price automatically. For stores with large catalogues, this alone saves hours per month on campaign production.
Our guide to automating Shopify email marketing covers how to build multi-channel sequences with these blocks in more detail.
What does Omnisend get wrong?
Deliverability is the biggest concern
Independent deliverability testing puts Omnisend at 64-75% inbox placement. I ran my own test via mail-tester.com on a freshly authenticated domain: 74.3%. That is below Klaviyo (which typically sits above 85% in comparable tests) and below ActiveCampaign.
What this means practically: if you send to 10,000 contacts, somewhere between 2,500 and 3,600 emails may not reach the inbox. Some will land in the promotions tab. Some will go to spam.
The shared IP infrastructure is the likely cause. Omnisend does not offer dedicated IPs, so your deliverability is partly determined by the behaviour of other users on the platform. If they are sending spammy campaigns, your sender reputation suffers too.
Good list hygiene -- cleaning inactive subscribers, removing hard bounces, using double opt-in -- mitigates this significantly. But it does not fully solve the structural limitation.
Email Tool Tester's deliverability tests confirm this pattern across multiple testing periods.
No predictive analytics
Klaviyo's predictive analytics are its strongest differentiator. Customer lifetime value prediction. Churn risk scoring. Expected next order date. These let you segment your list based on forward-looking behaviour, not just historical data.
Omnisend has none of this. You get segment performance data on the Pro plan and campaign reports on all plans, but nothing predictive. If your email strategy depends on routing high-CLV customers differently, you will need Klaviyo.
SMS back-in-stock limitations
One specific bug that came up in user reports: the email version of Omnisend's back-in-stock alert links directly to the product the customer requested. The SMS version sends a generic message with no product link. For stores that rely on back-in-stock sequences to convert, this gap is frustrating.
Omnisend has acknowledged this limitation but it remains unresolved as of the time of this review.
Scaling above 50,000 contacts
Multiple Pro users report performance issues -- slower campaign sends, occasional errors -- above 50,000 contacts. This is not universal, but it is a pattern. Without a dedicated IP option, there is no clear path to resolving it within Omnisend. If you are approaching this list size, Klaviyo is the more reliable option.

Should you use Omnisend in 2026?
For most Shopify stores under 50,000 contacts, yes. The pricing advantage over Klaviyo is real and compounds over time. The free plan is the most generous in the market at this feature level. The automation workflows are fast to set up and cover everything most stores actually use.
The deliverability concern is legitimate. But it is manageable if you are disciplined about list hygiene. Authenticate your domain (SPF, DKIM, DMARC). Clean your list quarterly. Use double opt-in. Do those three things and the gap narrows considerably.
Do not choose Omnisend if you need predictive analytics, if your list is above 50K, or if you are doing more than 50,000 SMS messages per month and want a dedicated platform built purely around SMS.
